‘ | Work hard. Don't make me vomit blood! | ’ |
—Mr. Philip's life motto |
Mr Philip, also known as Mr. P-Lip, is a Philosophy teacher at Titan Academy who teaches Class T1-T5 in the episode "17 Teachers You'll Meet in Every School". He is one of the new teachers that was brought into Titan Academy by The Organisation due to the school being merged with all other educational institutions.
Profile
Appearance
He is an elder of Chinese descent, who often wears a light-toned V-collar shirt, such as white or light blue, along with black trousers, and a stone bracelet on his right hand. On his left hand, he wears a metal watch. He has black irises, a trait in many Asian people. In Season 4, his hair is white, owing to his age, however, upon his return in Season 5, his hair is black, as a result of dying it.
Personality
He is quite mean to the students (shown by his actions), although he pretends to be nice and saying he encourages students to ask questions... only to snap infuriatedly back at them. Many students who dare to detest him have seen his fierceness, such as Hakim, JianHao, or Jasmine, who once mocked his pronunciation of the word "philosophy." After this happened, it left a scar on his impression of Class T1-T5, remembering them as a 'not such a fond class to teach.'
He is often aggravated over minor issues or setbacks, and will use his voice to the fullest extent to intimidate his opponents or enemies. He usually snaps at them in Singlish, in contrast to when he complains to other teachers such as Miss Sofia, in plain Mandarin, like his thoughts. He thinks that juveniles and adolescents should all respect him, as elderly people should be treated with a higher hierarchical ranking. He doesn't care about the students' wellbeing, unlike Miss Sherly, but instead, he cares about only his own. He complains that he 'vomits blood' which meant his life is getting shorter, and that his hair falls out constantly when they misbehave. As a man who likes to threaten others, he often does not actually keep up to them, such as the time when he promised to bring a cane to class, but that never happened!
He is also a stereotypical epitome of geriatric elders, who often do not have much of an idea about how technology is used properly, and as a result, when he uses Mr. Mabuhay's iPad for marking papers, he is deceived by an advert meant to scam those in his age group, which he clicks on and wins a 'prize.' Not too long after he puts his credit card details in, he realises that the scamming advert actually sucked money from his bank account.
Although it is accepted that he is quite stern, earnest, and straightforward, he can showcase his cheekiness or his humor from time to time, such as when he performed a Chinese live-action gesture (cutting a watermelon into two equivalent halves) to tell Mrs. Regna and the teachers to stop fighting in the office, after Mr. Dan was scolded by her for making a student fail academically. Another scenario is when he goes into the Academy's bathroom and concocts a prank to teach his misbehaving students a once-in-a-lifetime lesson.
To summarise, he is the solid archetype of a comic relief grandfather whose emotions are easily affected by his surroundings, and he immediately has to respond in some way to the ones criticising him or doing something that does not go his way, usually using verbal means.
